What is ¡Por Vida!?
San Antonio’s Healthy Menu Initiative
¡Por Vida! is a restaurant recognition program that helps make healthier food choices by identifying menu items that meet nutritional guidelines developed by the Healthy Restaurants Coalition. When you choose ¡Por Vida!, you make a better choice “for life”!
The ¡Por Vida! Nutritional Criteria includes:
- ≤ 700 Total Calories
- ≤ 8 g Saturated Fat
- ≤ 750 mg sodium (salt)
- ≤ 12 g added sugar
- No Fried Foods
- No hydrogenated oils (trans-fat)
The ¡Por Vida! Healthy Standard
Healthy menu criteria are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommends a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean protein.
Just For Kids
Children come in all shapes and sizes, and calorie and nutrient needs vary drastically by age and size. Consider these healthy suggestions.
- Offer one or more servings of fruits and vegetables
- Serve a variety of non-fried entree items
- Offer a variety of non-sugar-sweetened beverages
- Portion sizes should be child-appropriate
Water is the most natural, healthiest beverage adults and children can drink. Treat other fluids like dessert – an occasional treat, but not the main course.
Nutritional Criteria developed and supported by the Texas Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
