Ready to run the distance … 13.1 miles?

Is a half marathon a goal of yours, and if so what is the barrier that prevents you from doing one?

The first thing you will need is a positive attitude sprinkled with a great sense of humor. Trust me when I tell you that during your training you will often ask you yourself “am I crazy”? The answer is a little bit of yes and a whole lotta no : ).

A half marathon is 13.1 miles.

If you are already running up to 3 miles or more at least 3 times a week then I would say you are ready. I am not a certified trainer but a mom who took up running 15 years ago in the hopes of losing a few pounds. During those years I have worked with many long distance coaches and joined a running club to complete a full marathon and 24 half marathons. I guess you can say I picked up a few tips along the way!

Fun Facts on running the distance

  • Everyone will have their own pace
  • You don’t have to run 13.1 miles before the actual race
  • You don’t have to run every day during your training
  • Chaffing can occur
  • You don’t have to run the entire time
  • You can smile or cry anytime you want
  • Injuries can occur
  • Good running shoes and socks a must
  • Hydration and sunscreen always
  • You will have people twice your age passing you by (not kidding)

The best advise would be to join a running club, San Antonio has so many that finding one close by should be easy. Meet ups are 3-5 times a week with a longer run on the weekends. These running coaches will start you with a running plan that will increase your miles from week to week and provide guidance in keeping you healthy. This commitment can take up to 12 weeks to accomplish and just a few hours to complete. Running long distance really made me realize that I was capable of more than I ever gave myself credit for.

Health Benefits:

  • Long distance running stimulates the heart, respiratory system and the brain
  • Reduces cardiovascular mortality
  • Running helps develop mental toughness and leg muscles
  • The body releases serotonin when doing aerobic exercises which then improves your mood
  • Weight loss

Listen to your body for any sharp pains that persist or worsen during your training and meet with your primary physician if you have any questions. Hope to see you on a run in the near future.

Run. Race. Repeat. 13.1 miles.
